Why I fell in love with the north side of ibiza

The non-mainstream Ibiza guide

Why Ibiza is more than its club scene

There was a time when I would go to Ibiza to chase the club scene. I’d have to queue in lines for the bathroom, pay overpriced mix drinks, fight for a place at the bar, dance until sunrise with strangers and call it a night. Now, as I navigate the last months of my twenties, and the hangovers have become quite insufferable, I’m quite relieved to say those days are behind me. These days I visit Ibiza for the island itself. A Mediterranean island with an undeniable laid back charm. Blue waters, fresh grilled fish and a chance to let my inner island kid out to play.

During my last visits, I fell in love with the other side of Ibiza. The quiet side. Where the countryside feels open and calm. The beaches are slow and the restaurants don’t require a reservation. I want to share that slice of magic with you. Below are some of my favourite spots, some of them you already know – and some of them definitely worth your time.

Where to stay in Ibiza (ibiza villa stays vs hotels)

Private villa with view on Es Vedrà (great villa for a social holiday)

For the real Ibiza experience, stay in a villa rather than a hotel. A villa gives you space and privacy, and it will really make your vacation so much more private and laid back. I have rented with One of a Kind Travel many times and the service has always been superb. I’ve stayed in a villa with a view of Es Vedra, which had more of a social, party vibe. While the finca I stayed in last summer was on the north side. The best part was its huge terrace, where I would sit in the mornings, overlooking the trees, hearing the birds and feel so at peace.

Some snaps from the most magical bohemian Ibiza finca. Located on the North side, perfect for a romantic escape

I’ve also tried Nobu Hotel and Destino, but the ones I actually recommend are Soho Farmhouse, Six Senses Ibiza and Hacienda Xa Nema.

Where to go for lunch in Ibiza

Spicy Margarita at Cala Gracioneta

Cala Gracioneta is a small place with big food and good vibes.

Jondal is the go to for a long rosé filled lunch if you want to see and be seen.

Ses Boques is a simple fish restaurant where you sit with your feet in the sand. Fresh fish off the grill. There’s a sunbed area too, but it’s first come, first serve.

Aubergine is a countryside farm to table spot, in the middle of Ibiza near San Gertrudis. The food is so good here and the ambiance relaxed.

New on the island, Soho Farmhouse.

Must visit dinner spots

Zuma Ibiza for high energy and drinks

Sa Capella is new on my list. It’s in a renovated chapel and the meat focused menu is solid with a nice ambiance.

Casa Maca is my all time favorite. It overlooks Old Town Ibiza, the food is tasty, and there are plenty of starters to share.

I also really like Zuma Ibiza for dinner and drinks. They have a great bar central in the restaurant. For dinner I’d recommend reserving in the lounge area if you want to stay close to the music.

Formentera

Charter a day boat and go to Formentera. Book a lunch at Es molí de Sal. Check out Wajer Yachts, Pardo Yachts or Rand Escape.

Quiet beaches on the north side

Cala d’en Serra

If you want a quiet beach day, head north to Cala d’en Serra. It is idyllic and there is no data or wifi here, which adds to the feeling of being on a remote island and getting away.

Cala Xuclar on the north side has a tiny chiringuito with fresh fish and a breezy vibe.

Cala Xacarra is the best beach for snorkling.

Top sunset venues

Sunset dinner at Hostal Le Torre

For a sunset dinner with the right ambiance, go to Hostal Le Torre. Make sure to book ahead and during the sunset shift.

Eden Restaurant at Hacienda Xa Nema if you are looking for a romantic dining experience. Great sunset.

Experimental beach. Nice to book a daybed or come for sunset drinks.

Spa and wellness experiences

Relax at Six Senses Ibiza

Get a day pass at Hacienda Xa Nema to enjoy their pools and cliff views.

Six Senses is well known for its wellness facilities, so it’s worth checking out.

What you can skip

Lio’s overpriced dinner show with poor service. High minimum spends and they rush you to the next seating.

Sunset at Cala Compte, way too crowded.

A few quick notes to keep in mind

  • The north side is where the magic happens if you want calm, scenery and great food.
  • Villas give you space to unwind and make your own schedule.
  • Do not miss the quieter beaches, even if you love a party scene. Ibiza has more to offer than parties.
  • Book sunset spots ahead if you can, they tend to fill up.
