The Chedi Andermatt

Just two hours from Zurich, The Chedi Andermatt is the ultimate weekend escape for those seeking a luxurious wellness retreat. With its luxurious alpine asian rooms, world class spa and 3 Michelin restaurants, you will be in for quite a treat…

I have stayed at many mountain hotels, but oh my, did The Chedi take me by a pleasant surprise. In the heart of the Swiss Alps, this five-star hotel embodies luxury, exclusivity, and comfort. The staff is warm and welcoming, and every detail of your stay is arranged with meticulous care upfront. Just how I like it.

Located in the picturesque mountain village of Andermatt, The Chedi is surrounded by rolling meadows and beautiful white slopes. Its sophisticated Alpine-Asian aesthetic is warm and inviting, setting it apart from other premium mountain hotels that often lean towards a more traditional design. Personally, that’s not always my style. The Chedi is grand, elegant, and with all the checked-in New Yorkers, gives off serious Succession vibes. Its sleek, contemporary design even reminds me of Aman New York, but reimagined in a winter wonderland.

Perhaps you’ve already heard of The Chedi, as Andermatt has gained international fame thanks to this exceptional hotel. After staying here for several nights, I can confirm it lives up to the hype. Besides the iconic Badrutt’s Palace in St. Moritz, this is the best hotel I’ve stayed at in Switzerland when it comes to rooms, dining, and facilities. The Chedi boasts a world-class spa featuring Switzerland’s longest indoor pool, two Michelin-starred restaurants, 200 cozy fireplaces, and the most decadent suites where the best of Asia meets Alpine luxury. Trust me, this is the kind of hotel you want to come home to after a long day of skiing.

What it’s like inside?

What I love most about The Chedi Andermatt isn’t just how it looks—it’s how it makes you feel. The dark tones, open spaces, and high ceilings create an atmosphere that’s both grand yet intimate. Simply walking through the hotel made me feel instantly relaxed.

The lobby is thoughtfully divided into different areas, each infused with Alpine elegance: velvet lounges, fur throws, and roaring fireplaces. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a day on the slopes. The Asian influences—from dark wooden accents to Balinese artworks—add an international touch. Everything is curated to perfection, creating a space that feels both luxurious and effortlessly cool.

On the ground floor, you’ll find countless cozy corners perfect for quiet conversations, making the lobby feel incredibly private despite its vast size. While The Chedi is an ideal destination for a romantic getaway, it’s also well-suited for business travelers. The cigar library, for example, boasts one of the most extensive hotel cigar collections in the world (!). Walking in felt like stepping inside a gigantic humidor. I don’t even smoke cigars, but in such a setting, it would be rude not to. The fact that the cigar lounge is housed inside a library adds an old-world charm. Not that I opened a book—but had I wanted to, there were plenty to choose from. Also, a great spot to close a deal over a glass of whiskey.

Of course, The Chedi wouldn’t be complete without its extensive wine library. At the end of the lobby, you’ll find a striking glass-enclosed space with tables nestled between towering displays of fine wines. I didn’t do a tasting myself, but when I passed by, a group of American businessmen were deep in discussion, laptops open, sampling different reds. It looked like a very serious conversation—or maybe just a gathering to complain about their lazy sons.

For an even more exclusive experience, there’s the private cellar room, where guests can book a dinner surrounded by rare vintages. The next time I visit The Chedi, I’m definitely booking a wine tasting in advance.

How were the rooms?

If you think the lobby is impressive, wait until you see the rooms. They are even better. There are plenty of options to choose from, but I decided to treat myself to a Deluxe Signature Suite—because why not? Opting for a suite instead of a deluxe room was the best decision of the entire trip. The extra space made it feel like my very own private chalet, which, of course, I absolutely loved.

Spanning 110 square meters, the suite was a dream! It featured two walk-in closets (because imagine having only one), a private wine cellar, and a champagne-stocked minibar. The grand dining table, illuminated by elegant chandelier lamps, made the living room warm and cozy, while two comfy leather fauteuils were perfectly positioned in front of a fireplace— an absolute highlight of the suite.

The fireplace was iconic, beautifully placed in the center of the suite, subtly dividing the living area and bedroom. The best part of my evening was coming back from the spa, sipping red wine, listening to jazz, and relaxing by the fire. I guess I’m getting old.

Everything in the suite was controlled via an iPad, from the mood lighting to the Bose speakers, which were discreetly placed throughout the space—even in the bathroom (a personal favorite). There’s just something about starting your day with a steamy rain shower and your favorite playlist. The ensuite bathroom was another wow-factor, with natural stone finishes, double sinks, a soaking tub, and an oversized walk-in shower.

And finally, there was the grand balcony. Overlooking the Swiss Alps, it was the perfect spot for a peaceful morning coffee, wrapped in a soft bathrobe, with the sun on my face and the sound of birds chirping in the crisp mountain air. If I didn’t love skiing so much, I would have stayed out there all morning.

What about wellness?

If skiing isn’t your thing, don’t worry—the spa at The Chedi Andermatt has you covered. As one of the largest wellness retreats in the Swiss Alps, the 2,400 m² spa offers an exceptional range of facilities. From a 35-meter indoor pool with floor-to-ceiling glass windows to an outdoor steam pool, whirlpools, and multiple saunas—including a 60°C bio sauna and a 90°C Finnish sauna—there’s something for everyone. You’ll also find a hammam, a cold plunge, and an extensive treatment menu for ultimate relaxation. The all-glass design creates a magical atmosphere, letting you take in the snow-covered mountains while you unwind.

What’s on the menu?

The Chedi Andermatt offers a diverse selection of dining experiences, each as refined as the hotel itself.

The main restaurant, an elegant space decked out with grand chandeliers, flowers and greenery, and a striking glass cheese tower at its center, serves a mix of Asian-inspired dishes for dinner and a five star breakfast each morning. I never skip breakfast, so I came here every morning during our trip! And yes, I found myself venturing around the cheese tower even before noon.

What also stood out to me was the roomservice at this hotel. They were always quick and friendly, and because the suites have their own living room, the housekeeping sets the dining table for you. You need to try the Chedi Burger on the in-room dining menu! It’s one of the best hamburgers I’ve had in a hotel in a very long time.

For lunch, I’d recommend taking the gondola up the Nätschen mountain where you will find Gütsch. This mountain construction houses two Michelin-starred restaurants, each offering a different kitchen. Gütsch by Markus Neff (one Michelin star) showcases Swiss cuisine at its finest, with the lobster bisque standing out as a personal favorite. Next door, The Japanese at Gütsch — also awarded one Michelin star—offers an exceptional alpine take on Japanese flavors. Both restaurants offer spectacular panoramic views of the Swiss Alps.

Back at the hotel, The Japanese Restaurant presents a more exclusive fine dining experience, with two Michelin stars. With its limited seating and exceptional reputation, securing a reservation in advance is essential.

Though Andermatt is a small village, much of its entertainment revolves around The Chedi, with its exceptional restaurants, bars, and après-ski ambiance. This combination of world-class skiing, gastronomy, and relaxed elegance has truly won a special place in my heart.

I can’t wait to return to The Chedi Andermatt, and I highly recommend it as a top-tier luxurious winter escape. If you’re looking for an exclusive mountain getaway, this is the place to be. I highly recommend going here with your partner and friends!
