Four Seasons at Sayan

Experience Bali’s sacred energy and unleash the Ubud magic

If you’re seeking an extraordinary way to experience the real Bali, look no further than the Four Seasons Resort at Sayan. This architectural masterpiece is set along the Ayung River, right in the heart of Ubud—where the essence of Bali’s magic truly unfolds. Surrounded by lush green tropical forests, rice paddies, and the exotic sounds of the jungle, a stay at this riverside sanctuary is guaranteed to leave you feeling deeply connected to Bali’s cultural and spiritual soul.

Since opening its doors in 1998, Four Seasons Sayan has wowed guests around the world with its groundbreaking aesthetic. The resort’s design is beyond spectacular, featuring a bridge which connects Ubud’s mystical jungle to five-star luxury. It’s no surprise the property has won numerous awards for its visionary design and architecture, as the resort seamlessly integrates its surroundings of rice fields, jungle, and the Ayung River into an exceptional hotel decor. From the moment you check-in, it becomes clear that you’re about to have a sensational stay.

Arriving at the hotel and walking through the wooden suspension bridge that hovers above the jungle will be an unforgettable experience. As you walk through the towering gates, it feels like you step into a magical new world. A world that is filled with endless forest, croaking frogs and soothing river sounds. The bridge leads to a floating infinity-edge pond covered with lotus flowers, offering panoramic views of the untouched Balinese jungle. I’ve never seen anything quite like it—pure, unfiltered beauty everywhere around the hotel. Even if you’re not particularly spiritual, the walk across the bridge is bound to make your jaw drop.

The resort offers a choice of luxurious accommodations, from duplex suites to private pool villas. We opted for a one-bedroom villa with an infinity pool, an indoor and outdoor lounge area, a hot tub overlooking the jungle, and a striking outdoor tropical shower. Although the hotel features a grand pool near the riverbank, we chose to spend most of our time by our own villa and pool, enjoying the tranquility of the jungle sounds. With our personal concierge anticipating our every need, we experienced unparalled standards of service, privacy and comfort. Our stay at Sayan felt like a romantic jungle dream, where I was completely removed from the stress and the hectic rat race of the West, completely immersing myself into the Ubud ambience. It was absolutely surreal.

The in-room dining service was exceptional, offering an extensive menu of Indonesian and international cuisine. There was also the option of fine dining at Ayung Terrace, with panoramic jungle views, or a more laid-back dinner experience at the resort’s riverside restaurant.

The highlights of my stay were undoubtedly the early morning meditation at the lotus pond and the Sacred River Valley. I have never seen a spa set in such remarkable nature. The wellness experience felt deeply spiritual, thanks to the tranquil atmosphere and the magic energy of the Ubud backdrop. The treatments are based upon Balinese healing rituals and inspired by the energy of flowing water. Whether you choose a couple’s massage or prefer to unwind solo, it’s a unique wellness experience where nature’s power harmonizes with ancient traditions. The outdoor plunge pools overlooking the rice fields, the 3D background of the jungle, and the sounds of the flowing river, made for an incredibly rejuvenating experience.

In the end, we found our stay so captivating that we extended it, as during the first few days we were reluctant to leave the resort property. I highly recommend staying long enough to enjoy the hotel amenities while also venturing out to explore Ubud’s lively center. The town is only a short drive away and the bustling energy of Ubud offers an exciting contrast to the serene atmosphere of the hotel property.

The resort also provides unique cultural and culinary experiences, such as outdoor cooking classes or riverside picnics. One highlight for us was a private guided tour to a nearby water temple, where we took part in a cleansing water ritual. We visited several temples, wandered through picturesque rice fields, and even attended a local wedding, immersing ourselves in Bali’s sacred spiritual blessings. I couldn’t help but channel my inner Julia Roberts. Especially since some scenes from Eat Pray Love were actually filmed at the Four Seasons Sayan. Anyways, be sure to leave enough time to go beyond the hotel gates—you won’t regret it!

Of all the places we visited in Bali, Ubud was definitely my favorite, offering the sacred, spiritual Bali vibes that initially drew me to the island. Honestly it should be on everyone’s once-in-a-lifetime travel list. Whether you’re seeking deep relaxation, adventure, or a sense of connection with nature, this is a place where the magic of Ubud truly comes to life. For those that prefer to stay at the beach, consider combining your stay with a visit to the sister property in Jimbaran and experience the best of both worlds that Bali has to offer!
